Health Challenges of India’s Tech Professionals

In recent years, the tech industry in India has been witnessing an exponential growth trajectory, playing a pivotal role in driving the country’s economy forward. However, amidst the remarkable achievements and advancements, there lies a concerning reality – the health and well-being of our tech professionals.

A recent study conducted by Onsurity, in collaboration with the Knowledge Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI), sheds light on the pressing issue of mental health in the tech industry.

The study, titled “Burying the Burnout: Decoding the Health Challenges of India’s Tech Geniuses,” revealed some alarming statistics. It was found that a staggering 43% of Indian tech professionals experience health concerns directly stemming from their work. Long working hours emerged as a significant contributor to these health issues, with over 50% of tech professionals working an average of 52.5 hours per week, surpassing the national average.

The repercussions of such prolonged working hours are severe. More than half of the respondents reported experiencing adverse health effects, including acidity, gut problems, back and neck pain, erratic sleep cycles, and eyesight-related issues, among others. Furthermore, mental health concerns were prevalent, with nearly 45% of tech professionals disclosing struggles with stress, anxiety, and depression.

These findings underscore the urgent need for prioritizing employee well-being in the tech sector.

Yogesh Agarwal, the Founder and CEO of Onsurity, emphasized the importance of addressing these issues, stating, “It’s crucial that we don’t overlook the daily struggles of tech professionals in our pursuit of success.” He stressed the need for companies to provide a supportive environment for their employees to thrive in.

Bharat Patel, Secretary General of KCCI, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the demanding nature of IT/ITES sector jobs and the consequent impact on employee health. He emphasized the importance of preventive measures and fostering a supportive work culture to mitigate these challenges.

The study also revealed concerning trends related to sleep patterns and work-life balance. Over 26% of tech professionals reported exacerbated sleep patterns, with a significant portion sacrificing family events and celebrations due to work demands.

Employers play a crucial role in safeguarding the health and well-being of their workforce. Recognizing this, it’s imperative for companies to implement additional measures and initiatives to support their employees, particularly in the tech sector where work pressure is high.
