Group Personal Accident Insurance for Employees
Group Personal Accident (GPA) insurance is an employer-provided plan that covers your whole team under one policy against accidents. It pays a lump-sum benefit for accidental death and permanent disability, and a weekly benefit for temporary disability — protecting an employee’s income and family when an accident strikes, on or off the job.

What is group personal accident insurance?
Group personal accident insurance covers a defined group of people — usually a company’s employees — under a single policy against the financial consequences of an accident. Unlike a health policy, which reimburses hospital bills, GPA pays a defined cash benefit: the full sum insured to the nominee on accidental death, a benefit for permanent disability, and a weekly amount while the employee is temporarily unable to work.
Because it covers accidents specifically, GPA is inexpensive relative to the protection it provides, and the cover applies around the clock — not just during working hours. That combination makes it one of the most cost-effective benefits an employer can add to a group health or group term life plan.

Why companies offer group personal accident cover
For a small premium, GPA closes a real gap in most benefits stacks — the loss of income that follows a serious accident.
Protection beyond the workplace: A GPA policy pays out for accidents that happen anywhere and at any time — commuting, travelling or at home — not only for on-duty incidents. That round-the-clock cover is what employees value most.
Income security for the family: Accidental death or permanent disability can end an employee’s ability to earn. A lump-sum payout gives the family time and financial room to recover without a sudden loss of income.
Low cost, high perceived value: Because it covers only accidents, GPA carries some of the lowest premiums of any group cover, yet it reads as a serious, meaningful benefit — a strong retention and employer-brand lever for the spend.
A natural complement to health cover: Group health insurance pays for hospitalisation; GPA pays a cash benefit for death and disability that hospitalisation cover does not. Together they close the gap between medical bills and lost livelihood.
Right-sized for field and blue-collar teams: For construction, logistics, manufacturing, warehousing and field-sales workforces — where accident risk is highest — GPA is often the single most relevant protection an employer can provide.
What does group personal accident insurance cover?
A GPA policy is built around a few core benefits. Exact amounts vary by plan and sum insured — see the full Silver, Gold and Platinum breakdown on the Onsurity GPA cover page.
Accidental death (AD)
If a covered employee dies in an accident, the full sum insured is paid to their nominee.
Permanent total disablement (PTD)
Pays 100% of the sum insured when an accident leaves the employee permanently unable to work — for example, loss of both limbs or sight in both eyes.
Permanent partial disablement (PPD)
Pays a benefit for the irreversible loss of a body part or organ. On Onsurity plans this is 100% of the sum insured for the specified losses.
Temporary total disablement (TTD)
A weekly benefit paid while the employee recovers from an accident and cannot work — typically a percentage of the sum insured, subject to a weekly cap and a maximum number of weeks.
Accidental medical reimbursement
Reimburses accident-related medical costs. On Onsurity’s Platinum plan this is up to 20% of the sum insured or ₹1 Lakh.
Ambulance and support benefits
Onsurity includes ambulance charges of ₹2,500 per event as a standard benefit, plus funeral, child-education and vehicle/home-modification support on higher tiers — where many insurers offer little or none.
Common exclusions in group personal accident insurance
GPA covers accidents — not illness — so most exclusions relate to non-accidental causes or to injuries the insurer treats as avoidable. Typical exclusions include:
Self-inflicted injuries, suicide or attempted suicide.
Injury while under the influence of alcohol or drugs not prescribed by a doctor.
Injuries from hazardous activities (such as skydiving or racing) unless the policy specifically covers them.
War, nuclear risks and injuries sustained while committing a criminal act.
Illness, disease or any medical condition not caused by an accident — those belong under a health policy, not GPA.
Note: exclusions are policy-dependent. Always read the specific terms, conditions and exclusions of your group personal accident policy before you rely on any benefit.
GPA vs group health insurance vs group term life insurance
The three group covers solve different problems and work best together. Here is how they compare.
| Group Personal Accident | Group Health Insurance | Group Term Life | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What it pays for | Accidental death & disability | Hospital & medical bills | Death from any cause |
| Payout type | Lump sum + weekly benefit | Cashless / reimbursement | Lump sum |
| Covers illness? | No — accidents only | Yes | Death only (any cause) |
| Covers disability? | Yes — permanent & temporary | No (treatment only) | No |
| Relative premium | Lowest | Highest | Low |
How much GPA coverage should a company choose?
There is no single right number — size the sum insured to your team’s income, risk and the cover you already provide.
Anchor to annual salary: A common benchmark is a sum insured of 2–5× an employee’s annual CTC, so a payout can replace several years of income for the family.
Weight for job risk: Field, factory, warehouse, driving and construction roles carry higher accident exposure and usually warrant a higher sum insured than desk-based roles.
Match your team profile: Grade the cover by role or salary band if your workforce is mixed, rather than applying one flat number to everyone.
Check what health cover already does: If your group health policy carries a strong hospitalisation limit, you can focus GPA on the death and disability lump sum rather than duplicating medical cover.
Balance cover against budget: GPA premiums are low, so it is often affordable to set a generous sum insured — model a few options before you commit.
How claims work under group personal accident insurance
Step 1 — Notify the insurer
Inform your Onsurity account manager or the insurer as soon as possible after the accident. Prompt intimation keeps the claim clean.
Step 2 — File an FIR where required
For accidental death or serious injury, a police report (FIR) and, where applicable, a post-mortem report are usually required.
Step 3 — Gather the documents
Typically the claim form, medical records or a disability certificate from a registered doctor, ID proof, and the nominee’s details and bank information.
Step 4 — Submit and track
Onsurity’s Good Doctors team helps compile and submit the file and follows it through to settlement, so the family is not left navigating paperwork alone.
Step 5 — Receive the payout
Once approved, the benefit is paid to the employee (for disability) or the nominee (for death), usually as a single lump sum.

What is group personal accident insurance?
Group personal accident insurance (GPA) is an employer-provided policy that covers a group of employees under one contract against accidents. It pays a lump-sum benefit for accidental death and for permanent disability, and a weekly benefit for temporary disability, giving the employee’s family financial protection when an accident affects their ability to earn.
What does group personal accident insurance cover?
A GPA policy typically covers accidental death (the full sum insured to the nominee), permanent total disablement (100% of the sum insured), permanent partial disablement, and temporary total disablement (a weekly benefit while the employee recovers). Onsurity plans also add accidental medical reimbursement of up to 20% of the sum insured or ₹1 Lakh, ambulance charges of ₹2,500 per event, and funeral, child-education and vehicle/home-modification benefits on higher tiers.
How is group personal accident insurance different from group health insurance?
Group health insurance pays hospital and medical bills for illness and injury on a reimbursement or cashless basis. Group personal accident insurance pays a fixed cash benefit for accidental death and disability, regardless of medical bills — replacing lost income rather than covering treatment. The two are complementary: most employers offer both.
How is GPA different from group term life insurance?
Group term life insurance pays out on death from any cause (illness or accident). Group personal accident insurance pays out only for accidents, but it also covers permanent and temporary disability, which term life does not. GPA is cheaper because its scope is narrower; many employers run both alongside group health cover.
What is not covered under group personal accident insurance?
Common exclusions include self-inflicted injury or suicide, injury while under the influence of alcohol or non-prescribed drugs, hazardous activities unless specifically covered, war and nuclear risks, injury while committing a crime, and any illness or medical condition not caused by an accident. Always review your policy’s terms for the exact exclusions.
How much group personal accident cover should a company provide?
A common benchmark is a sum insured of 2–5 times an employee’s annual salary, weighted up for higher-risk field, factory, warehouse, driving and construction roles. Grade the cover by role or salary band for a mixed workforce, and balance the sum insured against your budget — GPA premiums are low, so generous cover is usually affordable.
How do employees claim under a group personal accident policy?
Notify the insurer promptly, file a police report (FIR) for death or serious injury where required, and submit the claim form with medical records or a disability certificate, ID proof and the nominee’s bank details. With Onsurity, the Good Doctors team helps compile and track the claim through to a lump-sum settlement paid to the employee or nominee.
