Quick Summary
A daily hospital cash benefit (also called hospital cash or hospi-cash) pays a fixed sum for every day an insured person is hospitalised — say ₹1,000 or ₹2,000 per day — irrespective of the actual hospital bill. It is designed to offset incidental, non-medical costs such as an attendant’s travel, food and lost wages.
How It Works in Group Health
- Paid in addition: The daily cash is paid over and above the main sum insured on the group health policy, not deducted from it.
- Per completed day: The benefit accrues for each completed 24-hour hospitalisation, usually subject to a maximum number of days per year and sometimes a waiting period of the first day or two.
- Add-on or rider: It is typically offered as an optional rider that an employer can attach to the base cover.
Best Practice for HR Teams
Position daily hospital cash as a low-cost enhancement for lower-income employees, for whom out-of-pocket incidentals during a hospital stay are hardest to absorb.
