The Workplace Basic Every Team Deserves
Nearly 70% of working professionals in India don’t have personal health insurance. One hospitalization bill can wipe out years of personal savings. But health protection is not just a matter of personal risk. Your uninsured employee could also be one major health incident away from causing productivity drain.
Group health insurance, bundled with wellness perks, can ensure your team stays healthy and financially protected. It can also be a great way to boost employee morale and drive productivity. When designed well, group health cover does not just end up being a cost in your bottom line but a key ROI driver.

What is Group Health Insurance?
Group Health Insurance is a health insurance policy that covers your employees against medical emergencies. Unlike individual health insurance, group health coverage can be availed from day 1. How to Apply for a Group Health Insurance Claim in the Onsurity Membership?
Raising a cashless or reimbursement claim is an easy process that can be done on the Onsurity Super App. Checking for Network Hospitals to avail cashless facility is also made easier in the ‘Search Cashless Hospitals’ section. Here’s a ready-reference step-by-step guide to the claim-raising process.
- 1
Log In
Log in to the Onsurity Super App using the registered mobile number. Under “Health Insurance” please go to ‘Hospitalisation Assistance’. Click on ‘Raise a request’. Fill in the necessary details and ‘Submit’. The request reaches the Good Doctors team at Onsurity, who will get back to you and explain the details of the cashless process.
- 2
Pre-Authorisation Approval
The member is expected to submit the mentioned documents at the insurance counter or the TPA desk of the hospital. The hospital then raises a cashless request. The member will wait for the pre-authorisation approval for the suggested treatment.
- 3
Review by TPA/Insurer
Once you submit your documents to the TPA/insurer, they’ll examine them carefully. Depending on their assessment, they’ll communicate one of three possibilities: either there’s a shortfall in the documents, the initial claim is approved, or the claim is rejected. They’ll notify both the hospital and the member accordingly.
- 4
Final Bill and Discharge Summary
Once the treatment is done, the hospital will provide you with the final discharge summary and all the bills. On the basis of your initial approval, the further discharge details will be shared with the insurer. Once the insurer finally verifies everything, you can pay the remaining standard non-admissisable items, co-pay, sub-limit excess etc. as per terms and conditions. Once everything is settled you will be discharged.
- 1
Log In
Log in to the Onsurity Super App using your registered mobile number. Navigate to the health insurance section and proceed to the claims tab, where you can submit pre-hospitalisation, hospitalisation, and post-hospitalisation claims. Remember to upload soft copies of the required documents. It is important to retain all original documents, as the insurer may request them if necessary.
- 2
Review by Good Doctors
Documents uploaded via the app are received by the Good Doctors team. They go through the documents to check if all documents are in place. Based on the availability of the documents, a shortfall may be raised, or the case is filed to the TPA.
- 3
Submission and Processing
Once all the documents are collected by the Good Doctors team, the documents are filed to the TPA. Based on the merit of the documents, the case may be approved, rejected, or queried for additional required documents. If queried, the documents once shared by the member follow Step 1 and Step 2.
- 4
Settlement or Rejection
Approved cases will be processed for payment. Once the payment is deposited into the member’s account, the case will be considered settled. If a claim request is rejected, the member will be informed accordingly.
Disclaimer: Onsurity acts as a group administrator, offering support during cashless requests and claims reimbursement processes. However, the ultimate authority for the approval, validation, and payment of claims lies with the insurance company. Additionally, the list of hospitals within the network is subject to change and is updated periodically. Therefore, it is advisable to verify the availability of cashless services by inquiring at the hospital’s insurance counter before admission, to prevent any unforeseen complications.

Prescribed medicines and follow-up consultation memos.
All original medical bills and reports.

Types of Groups Covered in Onsurity Membership
Modern workforces don’t look the same anymore, and healthcare benefits shouldn’t either. Onsurity membership covers all.
Types of Group Insurance available in an Onsurity Membership
Companies can offer various types of group insurance plans to their employees. Below are some of the most common types of group insurance plans available in India.
Group Health Insurance
This covers the medical expenses of all employees in a company. Typically, the employer pays for the insurance, but the cost is often factored into the employee’s overall compensation or CTC (Cost-to-Company).
Group Personal Accident Insurance
This is a type of insurance that provides financial compensation in case of injury or death due to an accident of the employee.
Group Term Life Insurance
This policy pays a fixed sum assured to the nominee in case of the employee’s death. Employees can add the nominee at the time of onboarding.
Difference Between Group Health Insurance and Individual Health Insurance
To secure employees’ health, employers must understand the differences between group and individual health insurance. Each type has distinct features and benefits, and recognising these differences is crucial. By valuing these distinctions, employers can choose the most suitable plan for their workforce.
Customise Your PlanGroup Health Insurance
It covers a group under a single policy.
The cost is often lower due to shared risk across the group.
However, continuity of coverage might be an issue if an employee leaves your organisation.
Individual Health Insurance
Provides personalised coverage tailored to the policyholder’s needs.
May command higher premiums, especially for those with health risks.
It ensures continuity. The policy can accompany the insured beyond their employment with your firm.
Things to Consider When Comparing Onsurity Membership vs Traditional Healthcare Benefits
Standard Health plans by Onsurity are just a starting point. What sets these plans apart is that they can be customised in whatever way you like, to fit your organisation’s exact needs.
Customise Your PlanOnsurity vs a traditional broker vs a direct insurer
The difference is not just price — it is speed, transparency, and the day-to-day employee experience.
Significant tax advantages — for both sides
Group health insurance is one of the few benefits that saves tax for the company and the individual simultaneously.
The entire premium paid by the employer for group health insurance is deductible as a business expense under Section 37(1) of the Income Tax Act. This reduces your company’s taxable income by the full premium amount — making GHI effectively cheaper by your corporate tax rate (typically 22–30%).
The premium paid by the employer on behalf of employees is not treated as a taxable perquisite under Section 17(2) of the Income Tax Act. Employees receive comprehensive health cover at zero personal cost — and pay no income tax on the benefit received. A genuine win for every person on your team.
Tax treatment depends on prevailing law and your specific circumstances. Please confirm with your tax advisor.

Group health insurance typically covers expenses linked to hospitalisation. This includes costs related to surgery, diagnostic tests, doctor fee, certain medications, room charges, ambulance cost etc. Onsurity’s holistic healthcare plans also offer a wide range of wellness benefits such as free doctor consultation, discounts on lab tests and medicines, nutrition plans, mental wellness solution and a lot more, in addition to group health insurance benefits.
4. How does group health insurance differ from individual health insurance?
Group Health Insurance is provided to an employee by an employer where premiums are either entirely borne by the employer or divided between the employer and employee. It offers standardized benefits across all employees covered under the policy. Individual insurance policy, on the other hand, requires an individual to choose a policy based on their own needs and pay the premium out of their own pocket.
5. How many members/employees can be covered under group health insurance?
There is no upper limit set on how many individuals can be covered under a group health insurance policy. However, there could be a minimum requirement for the number of individuals needed to form a group. Insurance companies typically require a minimum of 20 or more employees. However, Onsurity offers its healthcare plans to companies that have as few as 2 employees as well.
6. Can part-time employees be included in an Onsurity group health insurance plan?
Yes, Onsurity’s healthcare plan allows businesses to cover multiple individuals across various roles. From gig workers and interns to contractual employees, all kinds of employees can be onboarded into Onsurity’s holistic healthcare plans.
7. Are pre-existing conditions covered under Onsurity’s group health insurance plan?
Onsurity’s group health insurance extends coverage to a wide array of pre-existing conditions, including diabetes, asthma, thyroid issues, hypertension, and numerous others. However, based on the group size and average age of the group, there could be a short waiting period applicable for pre-existing diseases.
8. How do employer contributions work for group health insurance premiums?
Typically, employers bear the complete cost associated with group health insurance plans for employees. This is usually included in the CTC. In cases where the employer is unable to cover the employees’ dependents, they may offer an option where employees can pay the premiums for their family. This way the cost is split between the employer and the employee.
9. Can employees customise their coverage options within a group health insurance plan?
Onsurity’s healthcare plans allow companies to choose from a wide array of options to suit their business and employees’ needs. They can pick a plan that aligns better with their budget and requirements. Onsurity also gives companies the option to tweak the plans at regular intervals, if required.

11. Can employees keep their group health insurance coverage if they leave the company?
No! Since group health insurance policies are extended from the organisation’s side, once the employee decides to leave the company, they can no longer leverage their group health insurance plan. However, to ensure continuous coverage, individuals can buy a retail health insurance plan that suits their needs.
12. Are wellness programs and health checkups included in group health insurance plans?
Onsurity’s healthcare plans go beyond just health and life insurance benefits. Plans include wellness benefits such as free doctor consultations, big savings on health check-ups, doorstep delivery of medicines, fitness and nutrition plans, mental health solutions and a lot more.
13. What is the waiting period for the Onsurity Group Health Insurance Policy?
The waiting period can vary based on the type of healthcare plan opted for and the specific terms and conditions associated with it. The longest waiting period often relates to pre-existing conditions, ranging from 24 to 48 months (about 4 years). However, with some of Onsurity’s group healthcare plans, you can get your team’s health secured from day 1.
14. Can maternity coverage be included in a group insurance policy for employees?
Yes, maternity coverage is one of the key additional elements in a group health insurance plan. Onsurity offers the option to add maternity benefits based on the company’s requirements. This also covers pre- and post-natal care.
15. Can employees opt out of group health insurance if they have coverage elsewhere?
It’s beneficial to have an employer-sponsored group health insurance plan as it ensures adequate financial protection in the event of any medical emergency. An individual can have multiple health insurance policies so it’s not advisable to opt out of the GHI plan, particularly if the cost is being borne by the company.
16. What happens to group health insurance coverage if an employee is terminated or laid off?
In the case of termination or layoffs, employees can no longer avail themselves of the benefits of their employer-sponsored group health insurance plan.
17. Are there any tax benefits for employers who offer group health insurance?
Employers become eligible for tax benefits under the Indian Income Tax Act, 1961, when they pay premiums towards employees’ insurance coverage. Premiums paid are considered under the company’s expenses. However, it’s advisable to check with the insurer or the intermediary about the kind of tax benefits that are available for the plan opted by you.
18. How is the cost of group health insurance typically shared between employers and employees?
Typically, employers bear the complete cost associated with group health insurance plans for employees. This is usually included in the CTC. In cases where the employer is unable to cover the employees’ dependents, they may offer an option where employees can pay the premiums for their family. This way the cost is split between the employer and the employee.
19. What is the difference between GMC and GPA insurance?
GMC (Group Medical Cover) covers hospitalisation costs — room charges, surgery, medicines and ICU. GPA (Group Personal Accident) covers accidental death and disability. They complement each other, and many employers bundle GMC and GPA together for comprehensive protection. Onsurity offers both under a single membership.
20. Is group health insurance mandatory in India for companies?
Group health insurance (GMC) is not mandatory for private companies under central law, though some states and industries have specific requirements. Post-COVID, health insurance for on-site employees was widely mandated, and many startups and SMEs now offer GMC voluntarily as a key employee benefit. With Onsurity, plans are available for teams as small as 2 employees, making it accessible even for early-stage businesses.
